The child learns the basic landforms found on Earth- bay, cape, straight, isthmus, lake, and island. The above materials were bought, but parents and teachers can easily make this using hard clay and some empty containers! Check out your local dollar store for ideas! I recommend to start off with Lake and Island. (They are the easiest). You can even buy land animals or water animals to add to the presentation. (CHILDREN LOVE THIS!)
Example
Teacher: Today we are going to learn about the different types of landforms found on earth.
(Point to the Lake). This is a lake. A lake is a body of water surrounded by land on all sides. (Pour water into the lake portion of the tray) Have you ever gone to the lake before? What did it look like?(Teacher can place the "fish" in the lake, and a "bear" on the land)
This is an island. An island is land surrounded by water on all sides. (Pour water into the tray) Have you ever been to an island before? What did you see? (Teacher places the animals in the appropriate place)
To test the child's understanding ....try the 3 period lesson
1. This is an island. (Point to island) This is a lake. (Point to lake)
Move on to the next step.
2. Can you show me the island? Can you show me the lake?
If the child is having trouble showing you which is which, you may have to do the presentation again. If not, move on to the 3rd step.
3. What is this? (Point to island with out saying island) What is this? (Point to lake without saying it's a lake) If the child is having trouble telling you what each are, repeat steps 1 or 2 as necessary.
Once the child has shown an understanding of these two landforms, you can move on to the next two.
