Chloe's new playroom

I decided to things up a bit, and moved my daughters playroom downstairs to give her more space. I am sooo proud of how I transformed the room, and I wanted to share it with the rest of the world. Keep in mind, my daughter is 18 months. I tried to put works in the room that were age appropriate. Enjoy! More to come!

Great room. Must feel very satisfying and sure she LOVES it. The shelves you usd are a great idea - had not thought of them. Makes it look nice and clear as well.

Interested in the language activities you have out for 18mth old (most blogs seem to be for children 2yrs plus). My daughter is 16 mths and saying the sounds of letters when she sees them and Im wondering about language activities.

Once again - well done on room. Looks fabulous!

@Montessori Mum- Wow, I'm impressed that your daughter can decipher sounds! She definately is advance. If you do want to work with her more, I would suggest you use SandPaper letters. You can either make your own, or www.lakeshore.com has a set that is like $20. She is rather young, so I wouldn't push it too much. Don't forget that learning phonetic sounds isn't what's important at her age. She needs to work on movement, order, control, concentration, and independence. (Practical Life)I too, wanted to start my daughter on more advance Language activites but my mom suggested that I hold off for a bit, and concentrate on other developmental aspects. She had a good point. My daughter being able to read at 2 years wouldn't mean anything if she couldn't control her movements or have any order. So, in a nutshell, I think getting Sandpaper letters would be a good start. Also, have a lot of nomenclature materials. For example, I have a basket filled of artifical fruit and my daughter and I play games where I ask her to tell me what the fruit is, or have her give me a fruit. I am proud to say she has learned her fruits and veggies! I also have a Melissa and Doug Puzzle of the different types of shapes. We go over them one by one, and I trace them, and she copies me. I'm amazed to see that she is able to recognize a few shapes on her own! I hope these are good suggestions for you! Let me know what you think!

Hi thanks for the reply! (: I think will check out making own sandpaper letters. We are in Australia so lakeshore prob not possible - though they are so cheap compared to anything else I have heard of!

I agree with the importance of movement etc. She is certainly very big on this as well. Its just that she herself keeps going up to things and sounding out the letters independent of me - whether its looking at her books, seeing signs that we drive or walk past, or just soudning out letters on any old thing - boxes, dishwashers, pea straw bags! So I figure its probably a real drive in her.

The shapes idea is great. She is very into these as well. We did this today and she was very into it - and yes I too was suprised that she knew them. Previously we have really just read about them in books and done one or two puzzles.

Nomecultre materials are good idea too. I took some photos of veggies and fruit a while ago and we did that a few times. Will branch out to few other things too.

But definately into practial as well. Agree with your mum, that not much point in being able to read etc is other basics not in place.

Thanks once again - really enjoy your blog and get lots of great ideas from it.

Cheers.

HI there, I only discovered the montessori philosophy a few days ago and I am already hooked. I have a 7.5 month old and am making my home more child friendly. Today I set up a movement mat in our living room with a mirror on the wall next to it and some pictures on the wall down low for her to see. I tell you, it was a hit! she loved the mirror. She is also using the potty now too. But she can't crawl or move yet. I am also planning on doing her room with a low mattress and low wall shelves and mirror in there. Your play room is GREAT, we have a big double room at the back of the house that I am going to set up for her and our future children. I am also looking for a small table and chairs to put in the kitchen and am working out which cupboard I am going to asign for her things (plate, glass, cutlery etc). I live in QLD and am very interested in finding other families that are implementing the montessori method also. Great blog!!
